As a mom raising a toddler who only speaks Spanish, I am intimately aware of all the limitations for babies and toddlers who don’t speak English in the United States. And that’s even though I live in Miami, which has a prominent Hispanic culture.
Not all the books are available for Spanish-speaking toddlers. Not every television program or movie has a Spanish audio option. Toys that speak are usually only available in English. Theme parks and activities have limitations on how wholly our little ones can experience them.
So how do we best navigate these voids? Where are the secret gems our little Spanish-speakers shouldn’t miss out on?
They exist and I have seen questions from other moms in different Facebook groups asking for recommendations.
“What are some gentle phrases I can use for my toddler in Spanish when they hit?”
“Where can I find TV shows my toddler can watch in Spanish?”
“What are some Spanish-friendly toys I can get for my toddler?”
My 4.5 year old only speaks Spanish. Over time, we have learned a lot of ways to support his life in Spanish without making too much sacrifice. And there is more to learn!
There’s a Group for That
I have found that there is a Facebook group for every detail of life.
To my surprise there wasn’t one for this. So, I decided to create one. I have been living it and I have a lot to share as well as learn.
Using a private Facebook Group allows community sharing of information rather than having the information limited to one source.
Toddlerhood in Spanish
Toddlerhood in Spanish is a private group created for partially or completely Spanish-speaking toddler families.
I created this brand new group to be a community focused on attachment and gentle parenting. We encourage the discussion of approaching these parenting styles with little ones in Spanish.
Toddlerhood in Spanish is also meant for sharing tips and tricks on bringing all the magic of activities, books, entertainment and travel to toddlers who live their lives in Spanish.
I am in the continuous process of writing posts to add to the resources and guides on the Toddlerhood in Spanish page.
If you are a Spanish-speaking toddler family, please join and help me make it a great resource.
