Many of us are concerned about picking up this very infectious coronavirus.
We’re afraid of passing it onto vulnerable loved ones or how this can affect our babies.
Many breastfeeding mamas and pregnant ladies who are planning on breastfeeding have an additional concern on their minds: If I get COVID-19, do I need to stop breastfeeding so that my baby doesn’t get it?
It’s important that you know the good news.
The World Health Organization says it’s A-ok.
Not only can you breastfeed, but it’s better for your baby if you do.
In fact, if you were even thinking of weaning soon, hold off. Your baby needs your breastmilk now.
There is no evidence that suggests that the virus is transmitted through breastmilk. However, antibodies can be!
Actually, researchers have found that if a mother contracts COVID-19, the baby’s best protection is breastmilk.
How it Helps your Baby
Babies are born with pretty much no immune system. It develops and strengthens over time.
Breastfeeding mothers act as their baby’s immune system while the baby works on developing their own.
Whenever mother and baby are exposed to illness or threat, the mother’s body develops antibodies to fight off the illness.
Those antibodies are delivered to the baby through breastmilk so the baby has them, too.
So, the baby is always better off with your breastmilk even if you’re sick.
Typically, the baby has already been exposed to the illness by the time you start showing symptoms and could use your help to fight it off.
Make sure you still take precaution to avoid passing the coronavirus to your baby.
How to Protect Your Baby
- Wash your hands frequently (for 20 seconds) and before handling your baby
- Wear a mask
- Cough into your arm and away from the baby
- Don’t touch your face
Keep nursing, mamas!
