For as long as I can remember, it was par for the course if I peed just a lil bit after sneezing.
My friends would share a predictable sentiment afterwards.
“Just wait until after you have kids. It’s going to be way worse!”
I’ve heard a lot about the importance of kegels but ugh!
I. Don’t. Wanna.
There’s something about kegels that I just can’t stand.
I remember a pilates instructor incorporating them into our wind down exercises.
The torture!
The best way to describe it is: Kegels exasperate me.
Hyperfocusing on these little muscles that no one sees. Why do the work??
Yes, it could help me avoid peeing in my pants but how bad do I want to avoid a little trickle accident?
Is the work worth the reward?
There are more fun benefits, of course, which I will list a little more below.
Fast Forward to After I Had a Baby
So…they were right.
I knew they were. Just wanted to confirm.
Unfortunately, the adorable accidental trickles have graduated to must-change-your-underwear-after-a-sneeze or get-up-quickly-if-you’re-sitting-on-cloth-material.
Strengthening The Pelvic Floor
A few months ago, I listened to a podcast episode of Katie’s Crib (Katie Lowes who played Quinn Perkins on Scandal). This particular episode was called Get to Know Your Pelvic Floor.
It highlighted all the things that aren’t normal (i.e. peeing when you sneeze) and encourages you to seek a consultation with a physical therapist that works with the pelvic floor.
Benefits of Kegels
- Strengthens and supports pelvic organs
- Helps control incontinence of urine, bowels and gas
- It makes sex more enjoyable with you and for you
Ok, I Get It
So, I’ve been convinced that strengthening the pelvic floor is important but I don’t have the time, possibly the money or a strong desire to seek out a physical therapist.
[Enter Perifit]
I received an email from the kind people at Perifit asking if I’d be interested in trying out their product.
I did a little research and instantly decided yes.
What is Perifit?
This kegel exerciser is a phallic-shaped device that you insert in your hooha.
You then have games you play. You control the game by tensing your pelvic muscles.
Basically, you’re doing kegels without hyperfocusing only on doing kegels.
You’re distracted by concentrating on playing the game.
How Does it Work?
Download the Perifit app and connect it to the Perifit device via bluetooth.
Start familiarizing yourself with the practice sessions.
In the app, take a pelvic floor test to see the training program that is best for you.
I took the assessment twice because I didn’t feel like the description of my challenges sounded accurate the first time around. I was afraid maybe they didn’t have a scenario that really matched me.
After retaking it, I was relieved to see it sounded spot on.
As you play, other games unlock.
You can track your progress over time in the app.
Is it Worth it?
To me, it is.
As I already covered, I really don’t like doing kegels and I don’t feel I am willing to invest the time and money in getting a physical therapist so if I’m going to do anything to help the problem–which I need to–this is the approach that seems feasible for me.
To be honest, I have not been as consistent as I should be in using it. Between watching my toddler 24/7 and reprioritizing everything during this pandemic, it’s challenging to find time.
Even still, I notice some improvements during sneezes.
